Time To Dust The Cobwebs Off

Happy New Year everyone! Tis the season that I am back to writing. If you are new to my blog, welcome, I’m so glad you’re here. I’m Hannnah, I’m an artist and a sailor, AND during the month of winter, I am also a writer. My most recent blog post (aside from some sailing updates) was back in April, when I was gearing up for the change in season. In the past, I’ve grappled with the fact that I can’t seem to be consistent with things year round. I can’t bring myself to write in the summer, and I have a much harder time socializing in the winter. It feels as though I’m finally releasing some of these grapplings, and allowing myself to live in the flow of the seasons. Allowing myself to move with the natural cycles around me is a privilege that I try not to take for granted.

If you don’t know me yet, Hi! I’m Hannah. This is a selfie of me sailing down the Delaware Bay

If this blog has served any purpose for myself, it has been to document myself coming to this realization. You can track my grapplings, starting with this post, where I was desperately trying to take the energy of winter into spring. And then moving to the post A Summer Update, where I obviously realized that was not possible. I touched on it a bit when I came back to writing last winter (read here), and then finally came to a stance of full acceptance in my last post from the 2022 writing season.

Through all of this I’m left in the space where I am now – trying to accept the energy of each season. And so, I write for the internet again, after an 8 month hiatus. Unfortunately this means that my eloquence may be a tad rusty, and my cadence a bit choppy. But if you stick with me each week, I’m sure you will get at least one masterpiece of a blog post by April(:

This post serves as a little update on me and my life. As a preview of posts to come (and to hold myself to it) this year I plan on focusing most of my writing on how I’m shifting my life and my business to be more environmentally sustainable. Many ideas have been brewing over the past couple of months and I’m looking forward to morphing those ideas to actions. Not to leave you on a cliffhanger, but, more on that next week.

As for a me-update: SV Phoenix is on the hard, and myself and Roger (my fuzzy first mate) are living with my partner (and amazing cat dad) up in Vermont. We miss Phoenix like crazy, but are so happy to spend this winter up north. After spending a year and a half living aboard, it is nice to experience land life for a bit, and have a bit of room to spread out. During the process of moving off of the boat I came to an interesting realization that the year and a half I spent aboard was the longest stretch of time that I’ve lived in the same space for almost my entire life. I came to this realization when I felt that I was being overwhelmed by the amount of STUFF I’d accumulated. Moving helps you to purge your belongings, and WOW I needed this move.

Phoenix wrapped up under the VT snow!

Moving my art studio into this apartment has been bittersweet, with some aspects being easier and some being harder. I find that I’m feeling much more organized, but the desire to create new things has to be forced a little more. I’m not sure if it’s the season or the setting, but creativity comes in cycles, and cannot be constant, so I’m not too worried.

My change in setting will likely continue to have an impact on my art. Logistically, the things I will be creating over the next few months will be impacted by the fact that I now have not only more space, but access to AC power, a washer/dryer, and a sink that doesn’t discharge straight to the lake. On a more spiritual level, the ideas I come up with won’t be entering my mind while Phoenix rocks me to sleep, but perhaps while I sit on land next to a frozen river. And I welcome this perspective shift.

My new studio space is a work in progress and I love it!
