Emotional Seasons

This post is going to be on the shorter side. The past week has been a busy week for me and an important reminder of how much the change in seasons can have such a big impact on me. I live a very seasonal life. I mean this in a logistical sense – being a sailor my job and living situation changes with the seasons. But for me personally I also live a very seasonal life in terms of my emotions and my state of mind. I want to dive into that a little bit today, because I think a lot of people feel this in different ways.

Winter for me is a time of deep recharging. We are all spending much more time alone and indoors. For me this time is crucial. I deeply cherish the slower pace and the time for reflection and introspection. The winter is a time when new ideas are conceived and new projects are started. Goals are made. Expectations are set.

Spring is then a time when we begin to gear up for summer. Warmer and longer days mean that we’re socializing more. In the sailing world up north it’s a time when everyone is hastily finishing up their winter projects and preparing to launch. We all get busier. Life seems to speed up.

This fast pace and consistent business can quickly deplete the cup that we’ve spent all winter filling. This weekend I will be focusing on trying to step into spring with some of the slow beauty from winter. I encourage you to spend some time thinking about how the seasons impact you and what you can bring from each different season into the present.
